The Laws of Online Gambling

Online Gambling

Online gambling is an increasingly popular activity. In fact, it is now the fastest growing industry in the world. It includes everything from casinos to virtual poker, and sports betting. All of these activities are regulated by both state and federal laws. Some countries have stricter laws than others. You should familiarize yourself with the laws in your own country before you play.

Although it may seem like online gambling is a no-brainer, the truth is that it’s not. The United States Department of Justice maintains that all Internet gambling is illegal. This is despite the fact that several Internet gaming sites have been found to be legal in other countries.

There are several federal statutes that can be used to enforce this law. These include the Wire Act, the Travel Act, and the Illegal Gambling Business Act.

The Wire Act prohibits the unauthorized placing of bets on a sporting event. An exception to this law applies to acts that are legal in both the source and the destination locations.

The Travel Act prohibits the unauthorized use of interstate facilities for unlawful activity. It also applies to Internet gambling, and specifically to Internet casinos.

Other laws that can be applied to this practice include the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) provisions. Section 1956, however, has raised constitutional objections to prosecuting these types of activities.

Regardless of which laws are in effect, there are still a number of factors you should consider before gambling online. Most importantly, you should be aware that you should always use a legitimate site.
