How to Play Poker

Poker

Poker is a game where the players make wagers and play against each other. The goal is to win the pot. One way to do this is by having the highest hand. The best hand in poker is a pair of five cards. However, the highest hand does not always win. This is because of the chance of a tie.

Before the game begins, players must contribute to the pot. The first player to bet is said to “bet.” Another player to bet is said to “call,” while the player who raises more than the previous bettor is said to “raise.” A player who checks does not bet and is not required to participate in the betting phase.

Poker can be played with any number of players, but six to eight players is ideal. The goal of the game is to win the pot, which is a total of all the players’ bets on the board at any given time. To win the pot, a player must have the best poker hand or make a bet that no other player calls.

A hand with five cards in the same suit is called a straight flush. A straight flush can be either high or low. A high straight flush is called a royal flush.
