Poker is a card game in which players place bets during rounds of betting. Each player is dealt 2 cards and can then choose to “check”, which means that they do not put chips into the pot; or to bet, meaning that they will put in a number of chips equal to or more than the amount bet by the player to their left. Players can also raise, which means that they will put in more chips than the previous player.<\/p>\n
A high hand wins the pot. The highest possible hand is a royal flush, which consists of a 10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace of the same suit. A straight contains 5 consecutive cards of the same rank (skipping between suits is okay). Three of a kind consists of 3 matching cards of one rank and two unmatched cards. A pair consists of two matching cards of one rank and another unmatched card.<\/p>\n
The player who has the highest ranked hand when the cards are revealed at the end of the round wins the pot. The player can win the pot by having a good bluffing strategy or by continuing to bet that their hand is the highest until all but one other player drops out. The player who is left with the highest ranked hand wins the pot and all bets placed during that round. Tournaments are a common way to test a person’s skill in a specific game.
